Old Man Bartolo Colón Pitched A Complete Game In 2017

Ancient baseball man Bartolo Colón started the 2017 baseball season with the Atlanta Braves, where he accrued a nightmarish 8.14 ERA in 10 starts before being released on July 4. It looked like the end for the beloved 44-year-old blobfish, even after an offseason spent toning his, umm, frame like a true champion. Minnesota took a flier on Colón on July 7, and he’s made four starts for the Twins since, with a much more workable (but still not real great) 5.18 ERA over 24 innings of work. Last night he took the mound against the Texas Rangers and looked, for one night, like his old, less-old self, surviving a rough first inning to scatter nine hits and a walk and earn himself a complete game. In the doing, he became the oldest pitcher to record a complete game win since oldest-man …

Why Your Team Sucks 2014: Kansas City Chiefs

Some people are fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. This 2014 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group.
Your team: Kansas City Chiefs.
Your 2013 record: 11-5. No franchise in football is better at rendering a successful regular season utterly pointless than the Chiefs. Remember: this team was coming off a 2-14 season in which the GM and coach witnessed one of the players commit suicide at the team facility (I believe Roger Goodell retroactively suspended Jovan Belcher for half a game after the fact). So going 11-5 without incident sounds like a fantastic leap forward, right? Well, see … Look, if you're a Chiefs fan, you should emotionally prepare yourself before we rehash all of this:

Mets Win Jason Bay Sweepstakes, Capping Glorious 2009

Mike Francesa broke the news (really?) that Jason Bay is going to the Mets, pending his turn-and-cough with the doctors. Yay, for legit sports news! (Also, the Giants, worried about appearing too youthful, signed 34-year-old Mark DeRosa.) [DailyNews/AP] …

Conan Returns With 2010 Joke, Deadspin Punchline

On the premiere of Conan, Conan O'Brien decided to cram as much news into one of his monologue jokes as possible. He covered a lot of ground, summing up the year so far with a humorous, very succinct, "comma Brett Favre's penis." …

The Patrick Mahomes Death Star Is Armed and Fully Operational

data-mm-id=”_o0fhqtq6q”>Patrick Mahomes didn't quite set the league on fire in 2019 the way he did in 2018. It was, admittedly, going to be nearly impossible to top his 5,000-plus yard, 50 touchdown, MVP-winning performance, and matters weren't helped by the knee injury he suffered halfway through the season. But instead of looking absolutely superhuman, Mahomes just looked somewhere between good and very good in the weeks leading up to the playoffs. After the Chiefs' epic comeback and subsequent beatdown of the Houston Texans in the divisional round on Sunday, it's safe to say he's shaken off any rust that may have come from spending a few weeks on the bench. After falling behind 24-0 early, Mahomes led his team on a 51-7 run through the rest of the game. He w…

As Live Sports Are Halted, The Athletic Is Free For 90 Days to New Subs

data-mm-id=”_b9kkk5h10″>The Athletic rolled out an offer today for new subscribers to get the service for free for 90 days. It's an interesting strategy from the site to garner engagement during a stretch that will almost certainly be largely devoid of live sports. The catch is that you have to enter in payment information, and if you do not cancel before the end of the free trial you will be billed the full-year rate of $59.99; this effectively means that the first year of The Athletic is about $45, which is a bit more than their typical teaser rate where the first year is $25-30. That being said, this model doesn't require the upfront outlay like their normal teaser rate does; both models require setting a calendar alert if you think The Athletic is not worth their full cos…

This Day in Sports History: Sean Woods Made a Shot Before 'The Shot'

data-mm-id=”_2al6457wu”>Duke and Kentucky met in the East Regional final on this day 28 years ago. Surely a significant portion of sports fans decided not to clear their schedules to watch live on CBS. One wonders if they've ever forgiven themselves for missing out on what can credibly be termed the best NCAA Tournament game ever played. Everyone remembers Christian Laettner, the heroic turnaround burned into history. But what's been largely lost to time is the acrobatic and clutch shot Kentucky's Sean Woods banked in to give the Wildcats a one-point lead with 2.1 seconds to play. It was his 20th and 21st point of the game to go with nine assists. It appeared as thought he put his team through to the Final Four. Kentucky had rallied from 12 points down to even force the …

Scott Boras Tells MLB Players They Shouldn't Bail Out Owners

data-mm-id=”_sb8sda2s9″>Scott Boras does not want Major League Baseball players to take further pay cuts in order to bail out the league's owners. The notorious super-agent sent a memo to his clients on Wednesday that laid out why they shouldn't budge on their salaries. In March, MLB owners agreed to pay the players prorated salaries aligned with how many games were played. Instead of being paid their entire salaries for the year, they would instead be paid at the same rate as their contracts, but on a per-game basis. Both sides found that agreement equitable then. Now the owners want to tear it up and reduce player salaries dramatically this year. Boras emphasized that games could not go on without the players:””Remember, games cannot be played without you. Players should no…

We Should All Hope the Giants Are the Terrible NFC East Team to Host a Playoff Game

data-mm-id=”_foxe111js”>This year's slate of Week 17 games promises a good amount of excitement. There are a handful of "win and you're in games", with the Browns going up against the Steelers and the Cardinals and Rams facing off for a wild card spot. The top seeds in both conferences are pretty much locked up at this point, but who they'll be playing is still very much up for grabs. Nearly every playoff team has something to play for, a rare occurrence. Only the Steelers and the Chiefs will be resting important players en masse. You know what's not exciting? The race for the NFC East. The battle for the top position and a playoff spot will come down to the final day of the NFL season as the Giants, Cowboys, and Washington all have a shot at taking the di…
